Introducing the Iowa City Area Sports Commission’s April Playmaker of the Month, Bill Reinking!
Once a month, we will be highlighting our sports community members during a time of year they work closely with our team.
Tell me more about your currently title, daily roles, and how you got started with State Basketball Championship.
I serve State Basketball Championship as its Executive Director and I oversee all facets of the organization. I founded the organization just prior to the 2012-2013 season, when I was coaching a middle school traveling team in Oregon. After experiencing success at a few weekend tournaments, I approached a few coaches from other teams about staging an annual State tournament for the top youth league and tournament finishers. The result was a sold-out 2013 Oregon Middle School Basketball Championship which serves as a model and now drives 17 State Championships across the U.S.
How did State Basketball Championships get started?
The State concept was initially born when my son, Jake, played in the 2011 12-year old Oregon State Little League All-Stars Tournament. Teams from every corner of the state converged to battle for the title. It was a true ‘state’ event, as coaches, parents and players shared many stories of their district play and their exciting journeys to State.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Aside from working with a phenomenal, talented staff at State Basketball Championship, I enjoy watching the thrill of the young athletes as they line up and tip off each State Championship.
What goals do you have for the organization?
To continue to provide a season-ending bonding experience for teams and their families. Ultimately, we’d love to operate an event in every state!
Favorite thing about the greater Iowa City community.
Everything! The city not only has a great college vibe with top facilities and hotels, but more importantly, the town’s midwestern hospitality shines through each resident we meet.
