NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships to Return to Coralville
The inaugural NCAA sanctioned tournament held in Coralville in 2026 proved to be a huge success for fans, athletes, and organizers. McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, made history as the first NCAA women’s wrestling team champions, narrowly edging out the University of Iowa.
“The Women’s Wrestling Committee was really impressed this past year with not only what the Xtream Arena was able to provide but also the work and dedication of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission team put into creating a tremendous and memorable inaugural women’s wrestling championship,” said Ryan Tressel, NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances. “We look forward to building on the foundation that they have set for this championship.”
“The NCAA rotates most of their championships, at all levels and all sports, to various hosts throughout the country,” said Josh Schamberger, President of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission and Think Iowa City. “For them to select Coralville for the second straight year is a testament to the extraordinary work of our staff and the hospitality our community provides to the athletes, staff, and fans. This is ‘Wrestletown USA’ for a reason.”
Women’s wrestling continues to be the fastest growing collegiate sport in the country. In 2026, 113 NCAA schools sponsored a women’s wrestling team. This is up from 76 teams from 2024.
